Tobacco sale:Action ordered against institutions

Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the state government to issue termination notices to all educational institutions that are allowing sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of the institutions after conducting an inquiry. The division bench consisting of Chief Justice JS Kehar and Justice AS Bopanna also directed the state government to issue notices of termination of grant and withdrawal of recognition issued to aided educational institutions and notices of prosecution under the Control of Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) against private institutions that are found violating the norms.

The state has to act on it by February 21 and the case was adjourned to February 22. While giving the aforesaid directions, the bench pulled the government. “Why don’t you take cat in against the principals of the colleges that have not displayed boards before their institutions prohibiting the sale of tobacco products. You are helping the hawkers to sell the tobacco products. Why are you not initiating any action against them?” the court observed.
